A day in the life of a commercial judge
Day before
Day before: Prepare by studying files, if necessary.
9 a.m.
Meet with the chair of the division and the other commercial judge in the judge’s chambers that adjoin the courtroom where the day’s proceedings are to take place. Professional judge details the cases to be heard.
10 a.m.
Put on black judge’s robe. Enter courtroom. Hear first case. Parties are called into the courtroom if they are not already there. Attempt to negotiate an amicable settlement. If this fails, begin contentious proceedings. Announce operative part of decision or decision to gather evidence. A “decision at the close of the session” is announced. The division leaves the courtroom to consult in chambers.
11 a.m.
Hear second case. After having already appeared twice before the court, the parties show a willingness to negotiate that the bench immediately accepts. After a lengthy debate involving the businesspeople present, a mutually acceptable settlement is reached.
11:30 a.m.
Hear third case. A witness is present to testify. A decision is handed down after a court expert is brought in.
12:15 p.m.
Removal of robes .
12:20 p.m.
Follow-up consultation on cases heard. Departure.
